PROVIDENCE, RI – The Providence College Friars men's basketball team earned the No. 3 seed in the Big East Conference Tournament after finishing the regular season with a 24-7 record, their best since the 2018-19 season. The Friars, who have been one of the Big East's most consistent programs under head coach Kim English, enter the tournament with legitimate aspirations of making a deep run and earning a high seed in the NCAA Tournament.
The Friars' regular season success has been built on a balanced attack led by junior guard Devin Carter, who is averaging 18.4 points per game and has emerged as one of the best players in the Big East. Carter, a potential first-round NBA draft pick, has been particularly effective in clutch situations, leading several late-game comebacks that have defined the Friars' season.
"Devin has been everything we hoped he would be and more," said Coach English. "He's a winner. When the game is on the line, he wants the ball, and more often than not, he delivers."
The Friars' defense has been equally impressive, ranking in the top 25 nationally in points allowed per game. Senior center Bryce Hopkins, who transferred from Kentucky, has anchored the interior defense while also contributing 12 points and 9 rebounds per game.
Providence's Big East Tournament run begins Thursday against the sixth seed, with the Friars favored to advance to the semifinals. A strong tournament performance could vault them into the top four seeds in the NCAA Tournament.
"This team has something special," said longtime Friars fan and Cranston resident John Mancini. "The way they compete every night, the way they play for each other—it reminds me of the great PC teams of the past. I think they can make a real run in March."
