The Cranston West Falcons baseball team has opened the 2026 spring season with a dominant 5-0 record, including a 7-3 victory over defending Division I state champion La Salle Academy that has the program generating genuine championship buzz heading into the heart of the schedule.
Senior pitcher and Vanderbilt commit Jake Ferreira has been the story of the early season, posting a 2-0 record with a 0.89 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 22 innings. Ferreira, who throws a mid-90s fastball complemented by a sharp slider, is considered one of the top pitching prospects in New England and is expected to be a high-round selection in the 2026 MLB Draft if he chooses to forego his college commitment.
"Jake is as good as anyone I've coached in 20 years," said Cranston West head coach Tony Iannuccillo. "But what makes this team special is that we have depth. We can beat you with our pitching, we can beat you with our offense, and we play excellent defense. We're built to win in May."
The Falcons' offense has been equally impressive, averaging 8.4 runs per game through the first five contests. Junior outfielder Marcus Thompson is hitting .520 with three home runs, and senior shortstop Danny Pires has been on base in every game of the season.
The team's schedule toughens considerably in April, with road games at North Kingstown and South Kingstown and a home series against Toll Gate. But early indications suggest that Cranston West is a legitimate contender for the Division I state championship for the first time since 2019.
