The Cranston East Thunderbolts softball team has opened the 2026 spring season with an impressive 6-0 record, fueled by the dominant pitching of senior Kayla Russo and a balanced offensive attack that has averaged 9.2 runs per game through the first six contests.
Russo, a University of Connecticut commit who throws a fastball in the upper 60s complemented by a sharp drop ball, has been virtually unhittable through the early season, posting a 3-0 record with a 0.42 ERA and 47 strikeouts in 33 innings. Her performance has drawn scouts from multiple Division I programs and has generated buzz about her potential as a high-round selection in the 2026 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year race.
"Kayla is the best pitcher I've coached in 18 years," said Cranston East head coach Maria Ferrante. "But she's also a great teammate and a great student. She makes everyone around her better."
The Thunderbolts' offense has been equally impressive, led by junior outfielder Sophia Andreozzi, who is hitting .560 with four home runs and 18 RBIs through six games. Senior catcher Brianna Pires has also been outstanding, throwing out four of five attempted base stealers and hitting .480 with two home runs.
Cranston East is a perennial contender for the Division I state championship and enters this season as the favorite after finishing as runner-up in 2025. The team's schedule includes road games at defending champion North Kingstown and a home series against La Salle Academy in late April that will be a key test of the team's championship credentials.
