Cranston Launches $12M Road Resurfacing Program, Targeting 47 Miles of Streets

Mayor Kenneth Hopkins announced a $12 million road resurfacing initiative this week that will address 47 miles of deteriorating streets across Cranston over the next 18 months, funded through a combination of state highway aid, federal infrastructure grants, and city capital improvement funds.

The program, which Hopkins described as the largest single road investment in Cranston in more than a decade, will prioritize streets that have received the lowest ratings in the city's annual pavement condition survey. The survey, conducted by an independent engineering firm, found that approximately 34 percent of Cranston's 312 miles of city-maintained streets are rated "poor" or "very poor" — a legacy of deferred maintenance during the city's fiscal crisis years of 2010 to 2015.

"Our residents have been patient, and they deserve better roads," Hopkins said at a press conference at the city's Department of Public Works facility. "This investment will make a tangible difference in the quality of life for every Cranston family."

The program will be managed by the Department of Public Works and is expected to begin work in May, with completion targeted for October 2027. The city has contracted with three Rhode Island-based paving companies, ensuring that the investment will support local jobs and businesses.

Conservative fiscal watchdogs praised the investment as an appropriate use of infrastructure funds but urged the city to develop a long-term maintenance plan to prevent the recurrence of deferred maintenance. "Resurfacing is necessary, but it's not sufficient," said Cranston Taxpayers Association President Frank Picozzi. "The city needs a sustainable funding model for road maintenance that doesn't require periodic emergency programs."

The program is funded in part by $4.2 million in federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act grants secured through the efforts of Rhode Island's congressional delegation.
