WARWICK, RI – The Rhode Island Airport Corporation has announced that the $400 million expansion project at T.F. Green International Airport in Warwick is on schedule, with the new terminal wing expected to open in late 2027 and bring significant economic benefits to the region.
The expansion project, which includes a new 12-gate terminal wing, expanded baggage claim facilities, and improved roadway access, is the largest capital investment in the airport's history. The project is being funded through a combination of federal airport improvement grants, airport revenue bonds, and passenger facility charges.
"This expansion will transform T.F. Green into a world-class regional airport and position Rhode Island for significant economic growth," said Iftikhar Ahmad, president and CEO of the Rhode Island Airport Corporation. "We're creating an airport that will attract new airlines, new routes, and new visitors to our state."
The expansion is expected to increase the airport's annual passenger capacity from approximately 4 million to 6 million passengers. Airport officials are in discussions with several airlines about adding new routes, including potential nonstop service to international destinations.
The economic impact of the expansion is projected to be substantial. The Rhode Island Commerce Corporation estimates that the completed project will generate approximately 3,000 permanent jobs and contribute $500 million annually to the state's economy.
For Cranston residents, who live just minutes from the airport, the expansion offers both opportunities and challenges. The increased economic activity will benefit local businesses and create employment opportunities, but the growth in air traffic will also bring increased noise and traffic congestion.
Construction is expected to continue through 2027, with the new terminal wing opening in phases beginning in late 2026.
